CTPAT 2.0 coming; now open to exporters

The Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (CTPAT) is a voluntary Supply Chain security program created by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) which is focused on improving the security of supply chains regarding terrorism. CTPAT LogoThe program was launched in November 2001 with seven founding participants. As of December 1, 2014, the program has 10,854 members.

The creation of this program has extended the US zone of security all the way to the point of origin which, in turn, has given CBP better abilities to assess risks and targets and allocate their resources to those shipments that could be questionable. The partnership has clear security criteria for members to meet. As Phase II begins deployment on May 30th, 2015, members will find a new trade homepage, security profile and enhanced account management. Along with the revisions in Phase II, CBP plans to deploy for the first time a program for Exporters, focusing on outbound cargo security as well as inbound.

CBP operates Attaché Offices in 21 countries around the world and has a Mutual Assistance Agreement with 73 countries, including Mexico and Canada. Additionally, they seek to educate stakeholders about CBP’s international programs such as: the Container Security Initiative; the Immigration Advisory Program; the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, and; various capacity building programs.

Eventually, the vision is that this system can evolve into a Trusted Trade Portal to allow international trade members to register as an international security interface. KFS as a service provider can expedite cargo because of our compliance and inclusion with CTPAT. We can assist with arrangements to begin your journey with a CTPAT certification or your development of a security plan for exports when Phase II begins. For example, as Mexico is a partner in the Mutual Assistance Agreement the security of supply chains back and forth across the border can be streamlined into easier, more expedited shipments.
